Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program
CASS Europe offers two pathways in its doctoral program namely: 1. a professional pathway, and 2. a research pathway. The research pathway is specifically aimed at candidates who are already working in a research capacity at a higher education institution or in a research organization and wish to earn a research doctoral qualification which will help advance their careers within their organization or explore new avenues of career growth following completion of the program. It is also aimed at candidates with a research-oriented Master’s qualification who wish to complete a research doctoral program in order to launch their academic/research careers whether at a higher education institution or a research organization. Candidates with these objectives in mind are oriented towards the research path in the doctoral program. Successful completion of the research path in the program leads to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification with specialization in Business Administration, Healthcare Management, or Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Management. The PhD qualification is awarded by CASS Europe.
A candidate’s chosen field of thesis research must be compatible with the areas of supervisory capacity at CASS Europe which currently are the following:
- International Business Management
- Global Finance
- Human Resources Management
- Business Strategy
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- Change Management
- Managerial Economics
- Supply Chain Management
- Healthcare Management
- ICT Management
The overriding objective of the research pathway in the doctoral programme is to train highly competent academics and researchers in the fields of business administration, healthcare management, and ICT) management. The programme places significant emphasis on research that meets the highest level of scientific rigor. It will equip students with the necessary analytical skills for carrying out high-quality teaching and research in various fields of business and management.
The programme is structured in a way that enables candidates gain experience early in presenting their own research in a seminar/workshop environment. All doctoral students are expected to make a presentation in research seminars and workshops at least once a year in their chosen field of the doctoral programme. These seminars and workshops provide students with the opportunity to obtain feedback from their peers and faculty.
Applicants are required to submit with their application package a 15 page doctoral research proposal which enables the institution to determine the coherence of their thesis research area with the above-mentioned areas of supervisory capacity of the institution and also, at the same time, determine in an objective manner the ability of the applicant to successfully undertake doctoral studies.
The programme is placed on level 8 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), 2012. It corresponds to the 3rd Cycle of qualifications as defined by the Qualifications Framework in the European Higher Education Area, (QF-EHEA), 2005.
Total duration for completing the programme on a full-time basis is three (3) years made up of courses/research seminars and workshops and doctoral thesis research. The course component of the programme amounts to 60 ECTS credit points.
Candidates start the programme with three fundamental courses in scientific research. These are:
- Philosophy of science,
- Qualitative Research Methodology, and
- Quantitative Research Methodology
There are 30 class contact hours in each of the modules. Following successful completion of these fundamentals of scientific research courses students then proceed to take the specialized courses in their chosen area of focus in the doctoral programme.
Apart from the courses/research seminars organized at the institution candidates in the doctoral programme are encouraged to actively participate in doctoral courses/research seminars/workshops organized at other higher education institutions in Europe and abroad so as to enable them gain a wider perspective of their chosen field of research.
